People respond to high school reunions differently because people had different high school experiences. Some cannot wait to relive the old days, while others are happiest to let the past be the past. A very successful couple returned to their high school and heard what others had done with their lives. Afterwards, the husband remarked “I saw your old boyfriend. He drives for Door Dash just to make ends meet. If you had married him, you wouldn’t be the wife of a millionaire.” His wife’s reply was simple. “No, had I married him, I’d still be married to a successful millionaire.” Her husband missed the point: everything he had was due to her influence and help.
Missing the point is never a pleasant experience. Sometimes it causes momentary embarrassment; while other times it can be a costly mistake. Luke interrupts his account of Jesus’ teaching with an important reminder. You should learn this truth before moving on in Jesus’ lesson. If you want to avoid missing the point Jesus is making, you cannot reject Jesus. Rejecting Jesus is never a wise decision.
