One of the great features of the church is that God in His goodness gives us exactly what we need. No one can do everything but each of us can do something and together everything is done. There is great wisdom and relief in knowing what one can and cannot do. For example, Larry and Jeremy do a great job making computers work together and Mike does wonderful work playing the organ. What would happen if we asked them to switch roles? In reality, attempting to do something we are not skilled or qualified to do is foolish.
Do you remember FRAM oil filters? The old commercial showed a mechanic explaining that the cost of a oil filter now was less expensive than the damage caused by not replacing the filter. The tag line was iconic: “You can pay me now, or you can pay me later.” The situation would be dealt with; and an expert would handle it best.
Luke, of course, knew nothing of oil filters; but he knew the importance of facing reality. Not everyone was willing to face the reality of life. They wanted to live life on their terms. Luke is clear: you cannot ignore Messiah Jesus. Once Jesus demonstrates His authority, others question it. After Jesus illustrates His authority, the people respond. Will the respond with ignorance or will they face reality? Regardless of what they (or you) do, Messiah Jesus will not be ignored.
