Memories can be deceitful. However, John’s lesson today is a basic reminder: Love God and love others. If you are going to live a meaningful life as a follower of Jesus, loving God and others is mandatory. John highlights three items to remember.

John teaches the basics of Christianity. First, Jesus is real; then, live in the light. Now he teaches that Jesus is a standard – a measuring device and a rallying point. Jesus is a strong and kind standard, exactly what we need and exactly what we need to remember.

John administers a “spiritual eye exam.” Bright light is involved; and it may be temporarily uncomfortable. However, this exam identifies problems before they become more serious.  Once identified, you can deal with the problem successfully. John tests your response to Light. Live in the light, not in the shadows.

Living in a chaotic world presents opportunity. First, we must demonstrate this world is not our home. Second, we prove our hope is not dependent on treaties, accords, or international agreements. Jesus continues teaching His followers. First, Jesus gave a lesson in prayer. Second, He reminded His followers God was aware of their situations. Next, He warned against disobeying God’s Word. Finally, Jesus explains how to follow Him. Following Jesus demands total commitment. Luke also highlights the need for total commitment.

Today we look at four different responses to Jesus and learn that Jesus demands more than just your ears to hear. Notice who is responding and how they respond. Ask yourself if you are truly listening to Jesus with your full attention.
