John administers a “spiritual eye exam.” Bright light is involved; and it may be temporarily uncomfortable. However, this exam identifies problems before they become more serious. Once identified, you can deal with the problem successfully. John tests your response to Light. Live in the light, not in the shadows.
“It’s always darkest before dawn” the proverb tells us. Israel’s national history unfolded that way. Instead of finding the light of God’s presence and blessing they experienced metaphoric darkness. Isaiah gave God’s promise of true light. This true light would come in the person of God’s Messiah.
